Ceramics Studio

Located in the E block basement on the UNSW Paddington Campus

The Ceramic Studio at the School of Art & Design, Paddington, is a vibrant and dynamic studio that is fully equipped with all the latest pottery equipment. The Ceramic Studio is a busy hive of creativity where you will find students from both Art and Design degrees working side by side.

The studio caters to traditional Ceramic techniques such as Hand Building and Wheel Work, as well as the industrial techniques of Mould Making & Casting. Here you will find the equipment and resources needed to make Sculpture, Art, Product Design, and Object Design.

Cutting edge technologies such as 3D Printing with Clay are also utilised within The Makerspace and Ceramic Studio. Students are encouraged to collaborate, experiment, and work in an interdisciplinary manner with the support of tutors and technical staff.

The Ceramic Studio workshop space consists of well-equipped dedicated teaching spaces as well as specialised areas for Glaze Technology research and Hand Building & Wheel Throwing work areas. The studio has a state-of-the-art Casting Room and numerous kilns for firing.

*Face to Face Inductions are run on a regular basis in the Ceramic Studio. Students can sign up for General Studio Inductions and Wheel Throwing Inductions at the beginning of each term.

The Hand Building Room

EB04 is the main teaching space in the Ceramic Studio. Lectures, presentations, and demonstrations are held in this space plus it is equipped with hand building tools and equipment used for hand building process, such as Slab Rollers and Extruders.

The studio is also equipped with a fully stocked Tool Cabinet that Ceramic students can access at any time.

6 Pottery Wheels are situated along one wall of the studio that students can access at any time during studio hours.

The Casting Room

EB03 is a space where students can use Plaster, Cement, Concrete, Latex, and Silicone to make moulds and casts.

The room is set up with custom stainless steel mobile benches, Casting Tools and Cottles and a large wash out trough.


Adjacent to the Casting Room is a dedicated Slip Casting space where students can access pre-made or bought casting slip to take casts of their mould.

Glaze Lab

The Glaze Room in the Ceramic Studio is a fully functioning laboratory, equipped with a multitude of Powdered Glaze Materials, Digital Weighing Scales, Measuring equipment, and PPE.

Once students are inducted into the Ceramic Studio, they are encouraged to work independently in the lab to test and trial glaze recipes.

We also have a large range of pre-made Earthenware & Stoneware glazes available to all students, plus a range of Oxides, Slips, and Underglazes.

The Kiln Room

The kiln room is well equipped with 7 electric kilns and 1 Gas reduction kiln.

Students are encouraged to assist in the packing and unloading of kilns through formalised inductions or one on one inductions with technical staff.

The kilns are fired to Earthenware, Mid-Fire, & Stoneware temperatures on a regular basis.

We also support students doing experimental firings such as Saggar Firings, Burn Outs using organic material, and the firing of metal, wire, and glass in sculptural forms.

Hot Desk Work Room

The Hot Desk Work Room EB05 is a dedicated workspace for students to work in out of class time.

It is equipped with 6 Pottery wheels, Slab Roller, Extruder, and a high volume of storage for Work in Progress.

Within this room is a space for Post Graduate students to work in and store their work.

The Ceramics Studio staff are avalible to meet with you to discuss your next project.

These consultations are avalible to all students including postgrad and HDR as well as staff and researchers.
