The Making Centre

Printmaking Studio

Located in room G113 and G117 on the UNSW Paddington Campus

Situated on Paddington’s long-serving creative education campus, UNSW's School of Art & Design maintains one of Sydney's oldest remaining vocational Printmaking Studios. Through a repetitive editioning process, Printmaking disciplines empower our students with a rewarding analogue ability to create multiple original works of art. Irrespective of your prior experience, our printmaking facility will sustain or compliment any creative practice.

Under the guidance of The Making Centre, you’re invited into an inclusive, nostalgic, and vibrant home of fundamental applications of creating artworks by printing. The facility’s interlinked studios harmonise four techniques, namely Intaglio, Relief, Planography and Stenciling. Chat to us about etching, woodcut, linocut, engraving, letterpress, lithography, monotypes, collagraphy, papermaking, book binding, screen printing and more.

Etching Studio

Our Etching Studios embody a commitment to chief Intaglio printing techniques including zinc and copper plate etching, drypoint etching, aquatint, mezzotint, engraving, collagraphy, and monotypes. Students are immersed into the studio’s co-operative atmosphere to master artisanal intaglio treatments such as hard and soft grounds, sugar lift, spitbite aquatint, multi- plate process, chine-collé, à la poupée, and viscosity printing.

Lithography & Letterpress Studio

Relief and planographic printing methodologies are celebrated by the facility’s ornate Lithography and Letterpress Studio. This resilient, skylit workspace is adorned with antique cast-iron printing presses and highlights a greener focus on user-friendly procedures. It presents students with instruments intrinsic to woodcut, linocut, lithography, and letterpress. Additionally, laser engravings or custom typography can be attained at The Makerspace.

Screen Printing Studios

Screen Printing or Serigraphy is a widespread form of stencil printing. Famous for pop art, screen printing is an established printmaking medium for fine art, textile design, and communication. Be sure to visit our independent screen printing facility and explore the immediacy of stenciling effects produced through ultra-violet photo emulsion, monotypescreen printing, screen fluid and filler, and hand cut pochoir compositions.
