Located in F102 on the UNSW Paddington Campus

Thriving on UNSW's Paddington campus, the School of Art & Design is the creative home of Sydney's pioneering design studio for Textiles. Our Textiles Studio is a popular, sun-drenched facility that equips students with an extensive suite of modern domestic and industrial resources suited to a wide variety of textiles design processes. Owing to an emphasis on experimental design, the studio humbly embraces any skill level.

The Making Centre, foster a contemporary and open-plan learning space solely dedicated to an ongoing exploration of everyday textiles applications such as fashion, interior textiles, furniture, art, sculpture, and jewellery. Chat to us about sewing, knitting, weaving, tufting, embroidery, felting, sublimation, eco steaming, immersive dyeing, thermoplastics, screen printing, and direct-to-garment printing.

Textiles Teaching Space

The expansive core of the textiles facility is our integrated Teaching Space. This collegial working and learning environment comprises of multiple large island workbenches and a curated machine production area. The combined zones equally salute handmade and machine strengths and trends in sewing, knitting, tufting, embroidery, dry felting, and loom weaving.

Wet Lab

Adjacent to the main textiles teaching space is the facility’s Wet Lab. Relocated and remodeled not long ago, the wet lab provides students with a convenient emporium of tools, chemistry, and appliances integral to generating textiles using wet processes.

Enjoy the possibilities and compelling results of wet lab techniques like synthetic and natural immersive dying, wet felting, eco-bundle steaming, thermoplastics, and bioplastics.

The textiles facilities have collectively prospered under the new management of The Making Centre team and its stakeholders. Regardless, we dutifully continue to develop and enhance where possible. Students can expect greater capabilities in the field of sustainability with the looming introduction of re-use technologies like industrial textile shredders. Keep an eye out for expansions to our Digital and Wet Labs too.

Screen Printing Studios

As an extension of the textiles facility, a stand-alone series of screen printing workshops devote a specialised studio to the commercialised prevalence of screen printing onto textiles.
