Metal Laser Cutting

Please note you MUST have the Workshop Safety Badge to access the Makerspace. If you do not have the badge, we will not allow you entry.



The metal laser cutter can only be booked during makerspace opening hours and will not be available to book if the machine is out of service.


Metal Laser Booking Information

General

  • Bookings can be made up to 14 days in advance
  • Bookings can be made in 1 hour allotments
  • If you are using the machine for the first time, or you will be cutting multiple sheets of material, allow at least 2 hours for your booking
  • On arrival please check in with staff
  • Maximum 2 people are allowed per booking
  • A time limit may apply during peak times
  • You will be charged by staff at the end of your laser cutting session

Laser Cutting Instructions

  • The metal laser cutter is located at the James N Kirby Makerspace
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes before your booking begins to either purchase your material or present your own material to staff for approval
  • Please make sure you have your file ready on a usb as a .dxf file type
  • If you are unsure if your file is correctly set up, arrive early and ask for assistance
  • Cancellations must be made 24 or more hours before the start time of your booking

Conditions for Metal Laser Cutting:

  • Metal laser cutting bookings are open to all UNSW students.

  • A booking is not a guarantee your job will be metal laser cut, your job will be reviewed by a staff member for suitability before cutting. If your job is quite intricate or involved consider consulting the Manufacturing hub first.

  • There is a $50 setup fee and an additional $100/hr of work time, plus the cost of the material. Fees apply for research and personal projects. Free or discounted services are available for thesis projects, student-led projects, and pre-approved coursework.

  • Metal for laser cutting can be purchased at our shop. Use material wisely and share the cost with teammates when possible. We cannot always guarantee full availability.

  • You can bring your own sheet metal however please note our bed size is 1200mm x 1200mm and there is a limit to the thickness of metal you can cut (see table below). There is also some sheet metal scraps available for small jobs.
