The Ceramic Studio at UNSW Art & Design is a lively, hands-on space where creativity takes shape - literally.
Equipped with everything from pottery wheels and hand-building benches to industrial casting and mould-making tools, the studio supports a wide range of ceramic practices. Whether you're sculpting, designing products, or experimenting with form, it’s a space where Art and Design students work side by side, learning through making.
The studio also embraces innovation. Technologies like clay 3D printing are available through our partnership with the Makerspace, allowing students to explore the intersection of tradition and technology.
With dedicated areas for glaze testing, wheel throwing, and hand-building, plus a fully equipped casting room and multiple kilns, the Ceramic Studio has everything you need to bring your ideas to life in clay. Our knowledgeable staff and tutors are always nearby to support your creative journey and encourage cross-disciplinary experimentation.
Face to Face Inductions are run on a regular basis in the Ceramic Studio. Students can sign up for General Studio Inductions and Wheel Throwing Inductions at the beginning of each term.

EB03 is a space where students can use Plaster, Cement, Concrete, Latex, and Silicone to make moulds and casts.
The room is set up with custom stainless steel mobile benches, Casting Tools and Cottles and a large wash out trough.
Adjacent to the Casting Room is a dedicated Slip Casting space where students can access pre-made or bought casting slip to take casts of their mould.
The Glaze Room in the Ceramic Studio is a fully functioning laboratory, equipped with a multitude of Powdered Glaze Materials, Digital Weighing Scales, Measuring equipment, and PPE.
Once students are inducted into the Ceramic Studio, they are encouraged to work independently in the lab to test and trial glaze recipes.
We also have a large range of pre-made Earthenware & Stoneware glazes available to all students, plus a range of Oxides, Slips, and Underglazes.
The kiln room is well equipped with 7 electric kilns and 1 Gas reduction kiln.
Students are encouraged to assist in the packing and unloading of kilns through formalised inductions or one on one inductions with technical staff.
The kilns are fired to Earthenware, Mid-Fire, & Stoneware temperatures on a regular basis.
We also support students doing experimental firings such as Saggar Firings, Burn Outs using organic material, and the firing of metal, wire, and glass in sculptural forms.
