ENG Makerspaces

Shop

Engineering Makerspaces stocks a range of commonly used materials for students to purchase. We endeavour to keep the shop fully stocked with all required materials however we cannot always guarantee full availability. To purchase materials, come down to the James N Kirby Makerspace and talk to our staff.

We are committed to stocking useful materials in the shop, if we are not stocking a material which is being requested frequently we will look into the safety, cost and availability of this particular material.

Payments

The ENG Makerspaces take card payment only, and you can pay in person at the James N Kirby Makerspace.

For Research and Thesis projects unfortunately we cannot take journal transfers, you may request a receipt from us and talk to your supervisor about reconciliation.

If you are working on a project through our Manufacturing hub please talk to our staff before purchasing material for your project.

Banned Materials

You are free to bring in your own materials to the makerspace but please note due to safety concerns, some materials are banned including the following:

MDF

Medium Density Fibreboard

MDF consists of wood fibres that have been glued and pressed together into a board. The glue that is used is toxic and can harm your lungs. We do not have the appropriate equipment to use MDF safely and so it is banned in all makerspaces.

Treated Timber

Treated Outdoor Timber

Treated timber has toxic treatments that are harmful to breathe in, and they cannot be used safely in the makerspaces. It is often recognizable as having a bright blue stain however not all treated pine is coloured, this includes most pallet materials. We do not have the appropriate equipment to use treated timber safely and so it is banned in all makerspaces.

Exotic Hardwoods

Such as Blackwood
