Concrete Sample Preparation Badge

Demonstrates competency in safely preparing concrete samples using the concrete mixer and vibration table within the TestLAB Concrete Sample Preparation Laboratory.

Concrete Sample Preparation Badge image

The Concrete Sample Preparation Badge certifies that the holder has demonstrated competency in safely preparing concrete samples using equipment in the Concrete Sample Preparation Laboratory within TestLAB, Building 20 Level 1, UNSW Canberra.

Training covers the safe preparation of concrete specimens using the Concrete Mixer and Concrete Vibration Table, including mixing materials, casting samples into moulds, vibration for compaction, and cleaning procedures. The concrete mixer SWPs require users to read the RMF first, then complete competency training with an authorised TSG trainer. The vibration table SWP also requires document reading and training by trained technical staff.

Users must complete the following requirements before obtaining this badge:

Prerequisites

  • Hold the TestLAB Safety Badge

  • Read and acknowledge the Concrete Mixer Risk Management Form

  • Read and acknowledge the relevant Concrete Mixer Safe Work Procedure(s)

  • Read and acknowledge the Concrete Vibration Table Risk Management Form

  • Read and acknowledge the Concrete Vibration Table Safe Work Procedure

  • Complete five supervised training sessions in the Concrete Sample Preparation Lab

Before attending any training session:

  • Users must book the Concrete Mixer

  • Users must confirm the availability of TestLAB Technical Support Group (TSG) staff

The badge will only be granted once TSG staff are satisfied that the user can safely operate the equipment required for concrete sample preparation. Once approved, the badge holder may use the equipment independently.

Always check the availability of TSG staff before coming to use the Concrete Sample Preparation Lab.

The RMF outlines the key hazards, risks, and control measures associated with preparing concrete samples, including:

  • handling and measuring materials

  • operating the concrete mixer safely

  • managing manual handling and environmental hazards

  • use of appropriate PPE

  • cleaning and housekeeping requirements

This module must be completed before progressing to the Concrete Mixer SWP module and prior to attending any supervised training sessions.

Completion confirms that the user has read and understood the safety requirements associated with using the Concrete Mixer.
