The Laser Cutter Badge certifies that the holder has successfully completed the required online components (Reading SWP and RMF, and completing the Laser Cutting Learn Module) and demonstrated competency in the safe operation of the Trotec Speedy 360 Laser Cutter.

Prerequisites

To enrol in this badge, users must:

The SWP must be completed first, followed by the RMF, and then the Laser Cutting Learn Module, prior to booking the induction session.

Online Component | Must be Completed Before Badge Training
Laser Cutter Badge - SWP

This reading module requires users to review and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for the Trotec Laser Cutters in the UNSW Canberra Makerspace ProtoLAB and ProtoHUB.

The SWP outlines:

  • Mandatory safety requirements and safe operating expectations

  • Required PPE (including fully enclosed footwear)

  • Key hazards (including fumes/air quality, electrical risks, and non-ionising radiation)

  • Required behaviour while operating the machine

Completion confirms the user has:

  • Read and understood the SWP

  • Agreed to follow all instructions and local Makerspace procedures while using the laser cutters

Laser Cutter Badge - RMF

This module confirms the user has read and understood the Risk Management Form (RMF) that applies to operating laser cutters, including the key hazards, required controls, and user responsibilities.

By completing this module, users acknowledge they understand that laser cutting activities involve hazards including (but not limited to):

  • Fumes / air quality risks, and the need for adequate ventilation controls

  • Non-ionising radiation / laser light exposure controls, including barriers and interlocks

  • Electrical risks, including controls such as RCD/RCOB and electrical test & tag programs

  • Training and induction requirements, including that trainees must read RMFs/SWPs and demonstrate learned knowledge during induction

This RMF also supports the associated Safe Work Procedure (SWP) and informs badge training requirements.

Laser Cutter Badge - Laser Cutting Learn Module

This module confirms that the user has reviewed the UNSW Making online learning content for preparing files and running laser jobs using Ruby (Trotec).

The Learn page covers key knowledge required before working in the laser space, including:

  • What Ruby is used for and when to use it

  • Basic workflow for preparing and sending laser cutter jobs

  • File setup expectations (vector vs raster, line weights, colours, scaling)

  • Common laser cutting/engraving settings concepts (speed/power/frequency concepts at a user level)

  • Job setup and safe “pre-flight” checks (focus, material placement, bed setup)

  • Avoiding common issues (misalignment, failed cuts, excessive burning, incorrect file formatting)

  • Good practice for clean outputs and efficient machine use

Completion of this module confirms that the user:

  • Has read and understood the Ruby laser cutting workflow at a general user level

  • Understands that this Learn Module does not replace safety documentation or hands-on training

  • Has read and acknowledged required safety steps (SWP + RMF) prior to the practical induction

Laser Cutter Badge - Induction

This practical induction confirms that the user can safely and independently operate the laser cutter in accordance with UNSW Canberra Makerspace ProtoLAB and ProtoHUB procedures.

During this session, users will:

  • Complete a safety briefing specific to the laser space

  • Identify emergency stop and fire response procedures

  • Demonstrate correct material inspection and approval checks

  • Set up a laser job using Ruby software

  • Correctly position and focus material on the bed

  • Run a supervised laser cutting or engraving job

  • Monitor the job safely at all times

  • Demonstrate correct shutdown and cleaning procedures

  • Follow housekeeping and reporting requirements

Competency will be assessed by an authorised instructor.
The Laser Cutter Badge will only be awarded once competency is demonstrated and signed off.
