The Makerspace Safety Badge @ ADFA is the mandatory entry-level induction required to gain access to the ProtoLAB at UNSW Canberra (ADFA Campus).

This badge introduces students and staff to essential safety, emergency, and respectful usage procedures required to operate within the makerspace environment.

This module confirms you have read and understood the ProtoLAB Terms of Use, which governs safe, fair, and respectful use of the ProtoLAB and its equipment.

By marking this module as complete, you acknowledge that you will:

  • Follow all ProtoLAB safety requirements (closed shoes, no loose clothing/jewellery, and safe conduct at all times).

  • Use equipment only if you are authorised and trained for it.

  • Follow all Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) displayed at each machine or station.

  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace (good housekeeping, proper waste disposal, return tools).

  • Respect shared access to equipment and other users.

  • Follow staff directions and safety instructions immediately.

  • Not allow unauthorised persons to enter or use the space under your access.

  • Report hazards, unsafe behaviour, incidents, or near misses to Protolab staff.

Important: Ongoing access to the ProtoLAB depends on complying with these Terms of Use.

If you are unsure about anything, stop work and ask the Student Manufacturing team for assistance.

This quiz assesses your understanding of the ProtoLAB Terms of Use, safety requirements, emergency procedures, and equipment access rules.

To pass this module:

• You must achieve a score of 100%
• You may retake the quiz if required
• Successful completion unlocks booking access to the in-person induction

Failure to comply with ProtoLAB safety rules may result in suspension of access privileges.

Makerspace Safety Badge @ ADFA Induction

This in-person induction is the practical component of the Makerspace Safety Badge @ ADFA.

During the session, Protolab staff will cover mandatory safety and etiquette information including:

  • Entry/exit points and access expectations

  • Emergency exits, evacuation procedure, and SafeZone awareness

  • Location of first aid kits and fire extinguishers

  • General workshop safety rules (closed shoes, no loose clothing/jewellery)

  • Respectful behaviour in shared spaces

  • What equipment is permitted under this badge and what requires separate badges

  • Where to find and how to follow Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) at each station

Important:

  • You must attend only the session you are booked into.

  • If you have not booked into a session, you cannot be signed off.

Successful completion of this induction, together with the online Terms of Use and quiz requirements, enables Protolab access under the Makerspace Safety Badge @ ADFA.
