Certifies competency in safe metallographic sample preparation processes including mounting, grinding, polishing and sample cleaning in TestLAB.

The Materialographic Sample Preparation Badge certifies that the holder has completed the required safety documentation and demonstrated competency in metallographic sample preparation processes within TestLAB at UNSW Canberra ADFA Campus, Building 20.

These processes include sample mounting, grinding, polishing and cleaning using specialised laboratory equipment used for metallographic and microstructural analysis.

Prerequisites

To enrol in this badge, users must:

  • Hold the:

  • Complete and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF)

  • Complete and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP)

  • Attend a minimum of 5 supervised training sessions with TestLAB Technical Support Group (TSG) staff

Training Requirement

To obtain this badge, users must complete the required reading modules and successfully complete at least 5 supervised training sessions. The badge will only be issued once TSG staff confirm the user can safely operate the equipment independently.

Materialographic Sample Preparation Badge - RMF

This reading module requires users to review and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) for materialographic sample preparation before proceeding to the SWP and supervised training.

The RMF outlines the key hazards, control measures, PPE requirements and emergency procedures associated with sample mounting, grinding, polishing, cleaning and related preparation activities in TestLAB.

Users must complete this module before undertaking the SWP module or any supervised training sessions.

Materialographic Sample Preparation Badge - SWP

This reading module requires users to review and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for materialographic sample preparation in TestLAB before undertaking supervised training.

The SWP outlines the safe operation of sample preparation equipment and the required safety procedures, including:

  • correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • safe operation of sample mounting, grinding and polishing equipment

  • general laboratory safety and hazard awareness

  • emergency procedures when working in the TestLAB environment

Users must complete this module after the RMF module and before attending any supervised training sessions with TestLAB Technical Support Group (TSG) staff.

Materialographic Sample Preparation Badge - Training Log

This module records the supervised training sessions required to obtain the Materialographic Sample Preparation Badge.

Users must complete a minimum of five supervised training sessions with TestLAB Technical Support Group (TSG) staff to demonstrate competency in materialographic sample preparation.

Before attending any training session, users must:

  • check the availability of TSG staff before coming to TestLAB for training session.

  • ensure that supervision is available for the planned session

  • complete the required form each time they use any equipment in this room

  • clearly state in the form which equipment or process they are attending to learn

Training sessions may include:

  • sample mounting

  • grinding

  • polishing

  • vibro-polishing

  • sample cleaning and handling

TSG staff will verify that the user can safely operate the equipment and follow laboratory procedures before approving completion of this module.
