The Metal Lathe – Level 2 Badge certifies that the holder has demonstrated advanced competency in the safe and independent operation of the manual metal lathe in RoboLAB, UNSW Canberra ADFA Campus, Building 18 Level 1.

This badge builds on the Metal Lathe Fundamentals and Safety Badge and is intended for users who are progressing towards independent machining and more complex project work.

To be granted this badge, users must:

  • Hold the Metal Lathe Fundamentals and Safety Badge
  • Complete a minimum of 20 hours of supervised project work
  • Demonstrate competency across a range of machining tasks and increasing complexity

Project work must be completed under the guidance of RoboLAB technical staff, with progress recorded and verified.

During this stage, users are expected to demonstrate:

  • safe and independent machine setup
  • correct tool selection and adjustment
  • appropriate speed and feed selection
  • ability to machine components to required dimensions
  • safe workholding for varying geometries
  • effective swarf management and hazard awareness
  • consistent adherence to workshop safety procedures

This badge confirms that the holder has achieved a level of competency suitable for independent use of the manual metal lathe, subject to RoboLAB access rules and staff guidance.

Metal Lathe Level - 2 - Training Log

This module is used to record and track the 20 hours of supervised project work required to complete the Metal Lathe – Level 2 Badge.

Users must complete project-based machining work in RoboLAB under the guidance of approved technical staff. All sessions must be reviewed and recorded by TSG / RoboLAB staff.

During this stage, users are expected to:

  • complete a minimum of 20 hours of lathe operation
  • undertake work of increasing complexity and independence
  • apply correct setup, tooling, and machining practices
  • follow all RoboLAB safety procedures and SWP requirements

Users must ensure:

  • all training hours are logged and verified by technical staff
  • work is completed at an appropriate competency level
  • staff confirm readiness before final sign-off

Completion of this module confirms that the user has:

  • met the required 20-hour training requirement
  • demonstrated consistent safe operation
  • achieved competency suitable for independent use of the manual metal lathe
