Competency-based induction for the safe operation of the ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter at UNSW Canberra ProtoLAB and ProtoHUB.

The ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter Badge certifies that the holder has successfully completed the required online components (Reading SWP and RMF) and demonstrated competency in the safe operation of the ProtoMAX WaterJet cutting system.

Prerequisites

To enrol in this badge, users must:

The SWP must be completed first, followed by the RMF, prior to booking the induction session.

ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter Badge - SWP

This reading module requires users to review and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for the ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter before completing the RMF and booking the in-person induction.

  • The SWP must be completed before the ProtoMAX WaterJet RMF module.

  • It outlines mandatory safety requirements, prohibited activities, required PPE, and safe operating expectations.

  • Applies to the use of the ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter at ProtoLAB (ADFA) and ProtoHUB (UNSW Canberra City).

Completion confirms the user has read, understood, and agrees to comply with all SWP requirements and local Makerspace procedures.

ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter Badge - RMF

This module requires users to read and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) for the ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter prior to booking the 45–60 minute in-person practical induction.

The RMF outlines:

  • Identified hazards associated with ultra-high-pressure water cutting

  • Risks relating to abrasive materials, splash-back, and noise

  • Control measures and required PPE

  • Emergency procedures and exclusion zones

  • Pre-operational inspection requirements

This module must be completed after the ProtoMAX WaterJet SWP module and before booking the practical induction session.

Completion confirms the user understands:

  • The hazards and control measures associated with the machine

  • Their responsibilities under UNSW WHS requirements

  • That safe operation is mandatory at all times

ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter Badge - Induction

This practical module assesses competency in the safe operation of the ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter in ProtoLAB / ProtoHUB.

Participants must:

  • Attend the full 45–60 minute face-to-face induction session

  • Demonstrate understanding of machine components and hazards

  • Complete required pre-operational checks

  • Follow correct start-up and shutdown procedures

  • Safely machine a part that meets specifications

  • Leave the machine in a safe condition

Successful completion requires demonstration of competency and TSG staff sign-off to grant the ProtoMAX WaterJet Cutter Badge.
