Servo Controlled Hydraulic Actuators Badge
Covers safe operation, risk awareness, and competency in using servo-controlled hydraulic actuator systems for dynamic testing.
This badge certifies that the user has achieved the required knowledge and practical competency to safely operate servo-controlled hydraulic actuator systems within TestLAB at UNSW Canberra.
The badge ensures users understand the principles of servo-hydraulic systems used for dynamic and static material testing, including load control, displacement control, and cyclic testing applications.
To achieve this badge, users must:
-
Hold a TestLAB Safety Badge
-
Read and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) and Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for servo-controlled hydraulic actuators
-
Understand key hazards including high hydraulic pressure, moving components, electrical risks, pinch points, and potential specimen failure
-
Demonstrate knowledge of required PPE, emergency procedures, and safe shutdown processes
-
Complete a minimum of five supervised in-person training sessions with TSG staff
-
Demonstrate safe and competent independent operation to TSG staff satisfaction
Upon completion, users will be able to:
-
Safely set up and operate servo-controlled hydraulic actuator systems
-
Perform basic test configurations and monitoring under approved conditions
-
Identify and manage operational risks in accordance with RMF and SWP requirements
-
Follow TestLAB protocols, booking procedures, and supervision requirements
This badge does not permit unsupervised or advanced testing beyond the user’s demonstrated competency. Additional approval may be required for complex or high-risk experiments.
This reading module requires users to review and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) associated with servo-controlled hydraulic actuator systems used in TestLAB at UNSW Canberra.
The RMF outlines the key hazards, risk controls, and safety requirements associated with operating servo-hydraulic testing equipment, including but not limited to dynamic load frames and actuator systems.
Users will gain awareness of:
-
Hazards related to high hydraulic pressure, moving components, and stored energy systems
-
Risks associated with electrical equipment, pinch points, and specimen failure during testing
-
Importance of proper training, inductions, and competency-based operation
-
Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safe working practices
-
Pre-operational checks, inspections, and equipment maintenance requirements
-
Emergency procedures, including safe shutdown, injury response, and evacuation protocols
Completion of this module confirms that the user has read and understood the RMF and acknowledges their responsibility to follow all outlined safety controls while operating the equipment.
This module is a mandatory prerequisite and must be completed before undertaking any practical training sessions with TSG staff.
Click here to ReadThis reading module requires users to review and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for servo-controlled hydraulic actuator systems used in TestLAB at UNSW Canberra.
The SWP provides step-by-step instructions for the safe setup, operation, and shutdown of servo-hydraulic testing equipment, ensuring users understand how to perform tasks safely and consistently.
Users will gain understanding of:
-
Pre-operational checks, including inspection of hydraulic lines, fixtures, sensors, and control systems
-
Correct setup of specimens, grips, and fixtures to prevent failure or misalignment
-
Safe operation under load control, displacement control, and cyclic testing conditions
-
Identification and management of hazards such as high pressure, moving actuators, and stored energy release
-
Required PPE and safe working practices during testing
-
Proper use of emergency stop systems and safe shutdown procedures
-
Post-operation requirements including equipment shutdown, cleaning, and reporting faults or incidents
Completion of this module confirms that the user has read and understood the SWP and agrees to follow all prescribed procedures when using the equipment.
This module is mandatory and must be completed prior to participating in any supervised practical training sessions with TSG staff.
Click here to ReadThis module is used to record all supervised training sessions completed on servo-controlled hydraulic actuator systems within TestLAB at UNSW Canberra.
To be eligible for the Servo Controlled Hydraulic Actuators Badge, users must complete a minimum of five supervised training sessions under the guidance of TestLAB Technical Support Group (TSG) staff. Each session must be properly booked, attended, and logged.
During these sessions, users are expected to progressively develop competency in:
-
Safe setup and operation of the actuator system
-
Specimen installation and alignment
-
Understanding and applying load/displacement control modes
-
Monitoring tests and identifying unsafe conditions
-
Performing safe shutdown procedures and post-test checks
Requirements:
-
Users must book the equipment in advance and confirm TSG staff availability before attending each session
-
Users must notify TSG staff at the time of training to ensure the session is recorded
-
All sessions must be conducted in accordance with the RMF and SWP requirements
Completion of five sessions does not automatically grant the badge.
The badge will only be issued once TSG staff are satisfied that the user has demonstrated safe and competent independent operation. Additional sessions may be required depending on user performance and test complexity.
