Responsible Spray Painting

So you need to spray paint...

What are your options?

1. Spray Booth

BEST OPTION

The spray booth in the DFL is the safest, cleanest and easiest place to spray paint. You will get the best results using this option.

Opening Hours: 9:30am - 5pm Monday to Friday

2. Outside on the grass

Only when the spray booth is closed

Must be done outside and NOT ON THE CONCRETE

Grass, or garden...but not near the poor plants

3. Homemade Spray Box

Pretty good option

Still needs to be done outside or in a very well ventilated space like your garage. Still consider overspray and do on grass or cover area well. Can be easily done with found objects.

The spray booth is located in the Design Futures Lab and is available to use during workshop opening hours.

Please talk to staff to obtain a key before using the booth. A spray booth badge is required but doesn't take long.

Spray cans - P2 dust masks are supplied and required when using the spray booth with spray cans.

Spray Gun - a half face respirator is required when using the spray gun in the spray booth, we have some available here but ideally bring your own.

We recommend that you give yourself at least a full day to finish your model so you can leave time to dry between priming and finishing coats of paint.

More information about spray finishing your models can be found here.

2. Spray Painting Outside

The spray booth is closed, your project is due in the morning, so what do you do?

We know it's late, you are stressed, and need to get this model finished for a deadline.

  • Grab a big piece of scrap cardboard or paper (the bigger the better!) There is usually some in the blue bin.
  • P2 mask is a good idea
  • head to the GRASS or a garden area (be careful of the plants)
  • remember there is always over spray DO NOT SPRAY PAINT ON CONCRETE, there are security cameras and estate management will come and find you.

3. Homemade Spray Box

The best way to spray paint if you can't use the spray booth

Here's a video of a really good set up if you need to spray paint. Great for home too, just remember there will still be overspray. Always spray on a grass or garden area. Not on concrete or your mum's kitchen table.
