Individual Training on the Doosan Leo 1600 CNC Lathe

After completing this badge you will be able to confidently and safely operate the Doosan CNC Metal Lathe independently. You will understand the purpose and process of CNC turning as well as the materials and tools required. 


This badge is a log of all training that is undertaken on the Doosan Leo 1600 CNC Lathe that is located the James N. Kirby Makerspace, J18. Training sessions are by request only and will be facilitated by an approved staff member where an overview of parts made and an accurate log of techniques and hours will be recorded. The badge will be awarded when the trainee is deemed to be competant by a Makerspace Technical Officer. 

Requirements for training include:

  • Holding a valid zID
  • Having a good foundation in CAD
  • Have a part or project and required materials ready

Areas of training include:

  • CAD for CNC turning
  • CAM strategies
  • Tooling
  • Fixturing techniques
  • Safe operation of CNC machines

Pre-requisite Badge/s

  1. Makerspace Safety Induction Badge (MS)
  2. Sheet Metal Safety Induction (MS)

Once you have learnt this badge you will be granted access to the following machines:

Badge Training (Individual)

You have completed out of 3 training sessions.

Generally this machine does not have scheduled Badge Training sessions. Instead please complete the above online learning components and then speak with Makerspace Staff in person to arrange some Badge Training on this machine.


Please note that due to the complex nature of this machine in most cases multiple training session will be required to become competent on this machine. After attending the Badge Training session Makerspace staff will keep track of user progress via a training log.  Once a user has been deemed competent on the machine they will receive the associated Badge.
