This is an exercise designed to help you learn CAM before you learn the HAAS Super Mini Mill 2. Makerspace cannot teach everything and machine inductions are a heavy resource investment. So you must be willing to teach yourself CAM before doing your machine induction, with some strategic guidance along the way.

1. Please download this link (currently being revised, please wait) and upload it to Fusion 360.

2. Try to generate the setup and tool paths with the following specifications 

Your tools: 

• T1: 3mm 3 Flute Flat End Mill 
• T2: 6mm 3 Flute Ball End Mill 
• T3: 6mm 2 Flute Ball End Mill 
• T4: 6mm 90 Deg chamfer / engrave
• T5: 5mm HSS drill
• T6: 6mm 120 Deg Spot Drill
• T7: 16mm 2f Shoulder Mill
• T8: 25mm 3f Shoulder Mill
• T9: 50mm Face Mill

Other information: 

All of the tools expect T2 are attached to the fusion360 file, with reasonable starting speeds and feeds. You can copy these tools into a Cloud library so you always have access to them. For T2 (6mm 3 flute flat end mill) you must come into makerspace to measure and model it yourself - Please ask a staff member and they will help you. You also have to create your own feeds and speeds using the internet and information from module 4. This is a great starting place.  

• Stock size: 60 x 50 x 20mm Aluminium 
• Allow minimum 5 mm of material on the bottom of the first operation for the vise to clamp onto
• Try to create parallel faces with smooth surface finish 
• Break all edges, even if it doesn't have a modelled chamfer  
• Engrave something into the back face  
• There is one deliberately impossible feature, you may fix it any way you like.  

3. Check your toolpath.  This is a learning exercise for you, please try to teach yourself before asking for help. In order to book your induction you must meet these requirements: 

• No plunges (you can see this in simulation) 
• Do not cut too much material at once (no large DOC and WOC, use multiple passes on the big chamfer, and do roughing before finishing passes) 
• Have finished all surfaces in your CAM (except for any impossible parts) - check your simulation remaining stock
• Separate roughing and finishing passes 
• Finish floors and walls separately 
• Spot drill before drilling 
• Make the drill operation peck using "deep drilling full retract"
• Chamfer all sharp edges  
• Try to avoid cutting on the tip of the ball mill and the chamfer mill (small diameters don’t cut well because they have a low surface speed and small flutes) 
• Set your origins for both sides of your part in sensible locations (for operation 2 you must probe off machined surfaces but you can get creative as to how you probe them) 
• A plan to probe your origin for both sides
• A plan for how you will hold the part in the vice  
• An attempt at determining correct feeds and speeds for T2 

4. Show a makerspace staff member your CAM to get approved for the induction. Until your CAM is approved, you will not get an induction. If the staff approve your induction, you will get a booked time for a 3-hour session to learn how to use the Haas Super Mini Mill 2 CNC Machine! 

5. After this induction you do not get the full badge, because fully learning the machine and safe operation takes experience. You may only use the machine with supervision. Whenever you use the machine you should complete your training log (link on the previous page). Once your training log is deemed sufficient you will be granted your full badge and be allowed to use the machine without supervision.  

This is a link to the form in which users can submit the hours they have logged on machines as part of their training log modules. Responses to the form are submitted to the nominated supervisor for approval. This should only be filled out after completing the hours and after checking in with the supervising staff member.
