Metal Fabrication Fundamentals and Safety Badge
Mandatory induction badge required to access the Building 18 student fabrication and mechanical workshops, and FabLAB at UNSW Canberra.
The Metal Fabrication Fundamentals and Safety Badge certifies that the holder has successfully completed the required induction for access to the student workshops in Building 18 at UNSW Canberra.
This badge confirms that the individual has:
• Completed the mandatory online safety quiz covering workshop hazards, PPE, emergency procedures, and UNSW Risk Management requirements
• Successfully completed a face-to-face competency assessment in the workshop environment
• Demonstrated safe use of low-risk hand tools and understanding of high-risk machinery access procedures
• Understood and agreed to comply with the Competency Based Training (CBT) swipe system
• Understood emergency response procedures (evacuation, lockdown, DRSABCD)
• Demonstrated knowledge of workshop hazards including electrical, noise, eye injury, manual handling, rotational, pneumatic, chemical, and radiation risks
• Agreed to comply with PPE requirements and housekeeping standards
• Understood the Buddy System and after-hours access conditions
This module confirms you have read and understood the mandatory safety and Risk Management requirements for the Building 18 FabLAB and RoboLAB Spaces.
By completing this module, you acknowledge that you understand:
-
Emergency procedures, including evacuation and incident reporting
-
Key workshop hazards (mechanical, electrical, noise, dust, manual handling, etc.)
-
PPE and dress requirements (safety glasses, enclosed shoes, no loose clothing/jewellery)
-
Safe use of tools and equipment (UNSW equipment only, follow SWPs and training)
-
Housekeeping expectations (clean workspace, return tools, maintain clear areas)
-
Access and supervision rules (CBT system, no working alone, approved access only)
If you are unsure about any requirement, you must consult workshop staff before commencing work.

Click here to completeThis Qualtrics quiz is the mandatory online knowledge assessment for the Metal Fabrication Fundamentals and Safety Badge.
It checks that you understand the core safety requirements for working in the metal fabrication / mechanical workshop environment, including:
-
Required PPE and correct workshop attire (including hair, jewellery, and loose items)
-
Workshop hazards (e.g., manual handling, noise, rotating equipment, eye hazards, electrical, pneumatic, chemical hazards)
-
Safe behaviour expectations (no unsafe conduct, follow staff directions, no working alone)
-
Tool and equipment checks before use (only use equipment in safe condition)
-
General workshop rules (including housekeeping and spill response)
-
Incident reporting (accidents and near misses must be reported to staff)
-
Competency Based Training (CBT) / interlocks and supervision requirements
-
Confirmation that you have read the relevant RMF and induction resources
Important: Passing this quiz is required before you can proceed to any practical induction or supervised access related to metal fabrication activities. If you do not pass, you may need to reattempt the quiz until you meet the required standard.
By completing this quiz, you confirm you understand that workshop access may be removed if you behave unsafely or fail to follow workshop rules, procedures, or staff instructions.
Click here to completeThis practical module is the mandatory face-to-face induction required to complete the Metal Fabrication Fundamentals and Safety Badge.
During this induction, you will develop and apply a range of entry-level metalworking skills under the supervision of workshop staff. The programme provides a foundational understanding of sheet metal fabrication principles, safe workshop behaviour, and the correct operation of basic fabrication tools and equipment.
The session combines safety verification with structured, hands-on fabrication tasks. Staff will assess your ability to:
-
Wear and manage appropriate PPE correctly
-
Identify key workshop hazards and controls
-
Demonstrate safe handling of tools and equipment
-
Apply correct housekeeping and spill response procedures
-
Follow supervision requirements and workshop behavioural standards
-
Report hazards, damage, incidents, or near misses appropriately
Induction Project Streams
The face-to-face induction project and duration vary depending on the participant stream:
-
ZEIT1504 students:
Fabricate a pullback-powered car over six hours (3 × 2-hour sessions) -
UNSW staff, HDR students, or Electrical Engineering stream students:
Fabricate a metal cube over 4–6 hours -
Civil Engineering HDR or undergraduate students:
Fabricate a drill holder/gauge over 4–6 hours
These projects are designed to ensure participants safely apply marking out, cutting, forming, drilling, fastening, and finishing processes while maintaining safe workshop practices.
Completion of this practical module confirms that you can safely operate within the Building 18 student fabrication workshop environment at an entry-level competency.
