Metal Lathe Fundamentals and Safety Badge
Certifies that the holder has completed the required safety documentation and practical induction for safe operation of the manual metal lathe in RoboLAB.
The Metal Lathe Fundamentals and Safety Badge certifies that the holder has completed the required safety documentation and practical training for safe operation of manual metal lathes located in RoboLAB, UNSW Canberra ADFA Campus, Building 18 Level 1.
To be granted this badge, users must:
Prerequisites:
- Hold the:
- Metal Fabrication Fundamentals and Safety Badge
- Read and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) for the Manual Metal Lathe
- Read and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for Using a Manual Metal Lathe
- Attend a 6-hour face-to-face practical training session delivered by RoboLAB technical staff
The training introduces users to:
• Metal lathe components and controls
• Safe machine setup and workholding
• Basic machining operations
• Swarf management and hazard awareness
• Emergency stop and safe shutdown procedures
This badge confirms that the user has demonstrated fundamental safety awareness and basic operational competency for manual metal lathe use within RoboLAB.
This reading module requires users to review and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) for the manual metal lathe prior to completing the SWP and attending the face-to-face practical induction.
Users must complete this RMF module before completing the Metal Lathe SWP module. The RMF outlines:
-
key hazards associated with manual metal lathe operation
-
required control measures
-
PPE requirements
-
emergency procedures
-
training and supervision expectations
Completion confirms that the user has:
-
read the RMF
-
understood the key risks associated with the equipment
-
reviewed the safety controls required before progressing to the next stage of the badge
This reading module requires users to review and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for the manual metal lathe prior to attending the face-to-face practical induction.
Users must complete this SWP module after completing the Metal Lathe RMF module. The SWP outlines:
-
mandatory safety requirements
-
required PPE
-
pre-start checks
-
safe operating procedures
-
emergency stop and shutdown steps
-
clean-up and housekeeping expectations
Completion confirms that the user has:
-
read the SWP
-
understood the required safe operating steps
-
reviewed the rules and expectations for manual metal lathe use before attending practical training
This module is the face-to-face practical induction required to complete the Metal Lathe Fundamentals and Safety Badge.
The session is delivered by approved technical staff and provides supervised training covering:
-
identification of lathe components and controls
-
safe machine setup and pre-operation checks
-
correct workholding and tool setup
-
basic machining operations
-
swarf management and hazard awareness
-
emergency stop and shutdown procedures
-
safe cleaning and housekeeping after use
Users must demonstrate safe behaviour and basic operational competency before the module can be completed.
