The Plasma Cutter Badge certifies that a user has been trained and assessed as competent in the safe operation of the plasma cutting system within the UNSW Canberra Makerspace FabLAB.

Prerequisite:

To be granted this badge, users must complete the following in order:

  1. Read and understand the Risk Management Form (RMF) for the plasma cutter
  2. Read and understand the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for the plasma cutter
  3. Attend and successfully complete a face-to-face induction (20 minutes) with TSG staff

During this process, users will:

  • Understand the principles of plasma cutting and machine operation
  • Identify key hazards including UV radiation, fumes, noise, and molten material
  • Apply appropriate control measures such as ventilation, guarding, and safe work procedures
  • Use required PPE including eye, body, and respiratory protection
  • Follow safe operating, shutdown, and emergency procedures

This badge ensures users can operate the plasma cutter safely and in accordance with UNSW safety requirements

The course for this badge is currently unavailable.

Plasma Cutter Badge - RMF

This module requires users to read and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) associated with the plasma cutter.

The RMF outlines the hazards, risks, and control measures related to plasma cutting operations, including exposure to UV radiation, fumes, noise, molten materials, and electrical hazards.

By completing this module, you confirm that you understand:

  • Key hazards associated with plasma cutting
  • Required control measures such as ventilation, guarding, and safe work procedures
  • Mandatory use of appropriate PPE (eye, body, and respiratory protection)
  • Emergency procedures and safe shutdown practices

Completion of this module is mandatory before attending the face-to-face induction and operating the equipment.

Plasma Cutter Badge - SWP

This module requires users to read and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for the plasma cutter.

The SWP provides step-by-step instructions for the safe setup, operation, and shutdown of the plasma cutting system. It outlines correct operating practices, required personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe handling of materials during cutting processes.

By completing this module, you confirm that you understand:

  • Safe startup, operation, and shutdown procedures
  • Correct use of PPE including eye, body, and respiratory protection
  • Safe material handling and cutting practices
  • Emergency stop procedures and incident reporting requirements

Completion of this module is mandatory before attending the face-to-face induction and using the equipment.

Practical Component | Must be completed after RMF and SWP modules and before attending face-to-face induction.
Plasma Cutter Badge - Induction

This practical module involves a face-to-face induction session delivered by TSG staff to demonstrate safe operation of the plasma cutter.

During this session, users will:

  • Be introduced to the plasma cutter components and controls
  • Learn correct setup, operation, and shutdown procedures
  • Identify key hazards such as UV radiation, fumes, noise, and molten material
  • Apply appropriate control measures including ventilation and guarding
  • Demonstrate correct use of required PPE
  • Understand emergency stop procedures and safe work practices

Users must demonstrate safe and competent operation of the equipment during the induction.

Successful completion of this module is required before the Plasma Cutter Badge is granted.
