Shimadzu 50/100 kN UTM Badge
Pathway for the safe and independent operation of the Shimadzu 50 kN and 100 kN Universal Testing Machines located in TestLAB at UNSW Canberra ADFA Campus.
The Shimadzu 50/100 kN UTM Badge certifies that the holder has successfully completed the required safety documentation, participated in supervised training sessions, and demonstrated competency in the safe and correct operation of the Shimadzu Universal Testing Machines located in TestLAB at UNSW Canberra ADFA (Building 20, Level 1, Room 171).
This badge covers the operation of two machines:
- Shimadzu Universal Testing Machine – 100 kN load capacity
- Shimadzu Universal Testing Machine – 50 kN load capacity
These machines are used for mechanical testing of materials, including tensile, compression and other controlled loading experiments conducted within TestLAB.
To achieve this badge, users must:
- Hold the TestLAB Safety Badge as a prerequisite.
- Complete and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for the Shimadzu Universal Testing Machines.
- Complete and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) associated with the equipment.
- Attend a minimum of five supervised training sessions with TestLAB Technical Support Group (TSG) staff.
- Ensure each training session is logged in the Makerspace badge system by TSG staff.
Users must book the Universal Testing Machine through the official booking system prior to attending any training session and confirm the availability of TestLAB TSG staff.
During each training session, users are responsible for notifying the supervising TSG staff member to record their training session in the system.
Once TestLAB TSG staff are satisfied that the user has demonstrated the required competency and understanding of safe operating procedures, the Shimadzu 50/100 kN UTM Badge will be issued.
Upon receiving this badge, the user is authorised to operate the Shimadzu Universal Testing Machines independently without direct supervision.
However, users are encouraged to seek assistance from TestLAB TSG staff whenever required, particularly when conducting new experiments or if they are uncertain about equipment operation.
This badge ensures that all users operating the Shimadzu Universal Testing Machines have demonstrated an appropriate level of safety awareness, operational competency, and familiarity with TestLAB procedures.
This reading module requires users to review and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for the Shimadzu 50/100 kN Universal Testing Machines located in TestLAB, UNSW Canberra ADFA Campus, Building 20, Level 1, Room 171.
The SWP outlines:
-
safety requirements and operating conditions
-
user responsibilities and PPE requirements
-
equipment limitations and safe operation practices
Completion of this module confirms the user has read and understood the SWP and agrees to follow TestLAB procedures.
Completion of the SWP does not allow independent use of the equipment. Users must also complete the RMF module and supervised training sessions logged by TestLAB TSG staff to obtain the badge.

The RMF outlines:
-
identified hazards and associated risks
-
required control measures
-
safe operating practices when using the UTMs
By completing this module, users confirm they understand risks associated with:
-
high loads
-
moving mechanical components
-
specimen failure
-
improper setup or operation
Completion of this module does not permit independent use of the equipment. Users must also complete supervised training sessions and competency assessment by TestLAB TSG staff before the badge is issued.

Please note:
-
booking the equipment does not permit independent use
-
all sessions must be supervised by TSG staff
-
training sessions must be logged in the system by TSG staff as part of the pathway toward the Shimadzu 50/100 kN UTM Badge.
This module records the supervised training sessions for the Shimadzu UTM located in TestLAB, UNSW Canberra ADFA Campus, Building 20, Level 1, Room 171.
To be eligible for the Shimadzu 50/100 kN UTM Badge, users must:
-
complete a minimum of five supervised training sessions
-
attend sessions supervised by TestLAB Technical Support Group (TSG) staff
-
ensure each session is logged in the system by TSG staff
Users must also:
-
confirm TSG staff availability
This module does not automatically grant the badge.
The badge will only be issued once TSG staff confirm the user can safely and competently operate the equipment, and additional training may be required if necessary.
