The UNSW Canberra Makerspace

The UNSW Canberra Makerspace is a network of interconnected workshops, laboratories and fabrication spaces that support teaching, research and hands-on learning across engineering and technology disciplines. Making in all its forms is a fundamental part of the learning experience, and the Makerspace Technical Team is there to support students, staff and researchers throughout the entire process.

Our team of skilled technical staff provides guidance across all stages of development — from initial concept and design through to prototyping, testing and final realisation. Whether working on coursework, research projects or innovation initiatives, users are supported in transforming ideas into functional outcomes.

The Makerspace includes a range of well-equipped facilities across the ADFA and UNSW Canberra City campuses, including ProtoHUB, ProtoLAB, FabLAB, RoboLAB, ElecLAB and TestLAB. These spaces provide access to modern tools, advanced manufacturing technologies and specialised equipment, enabling practical learning, experimentation and engineering innovation in a collaborative environment.

Not sure what a Makerspace badge is? No worries.

Badges are your access pathway to using the UNSW Canberra Makerspace safely and confidently. They ensure you have the knowledge and practical skills to use tools, machines, and spaces correctly before getting started — whether you are working on coursework, a research project, or independent fabrication work.

How it works:

  1. Start with an Entry Level Safety Badge: Your first step is completing the safety induction badge for your campus. Choose the Makerspace Safety Badge @ ADFA to access ProtoLAB, or the Makerspace Safety Badge @ UNSW CBR City to access ProtoHUB. For Building 18 spaces, complete the Metal Fabrication Fundamentals and Safety Badge. For TestLAB, complete the TestLAB Safety Badge.
  2. Progress to Equipment or Space-Specific Badges: Once you hold the relevant entry-level badge, you can work towards additional badges that unlock specific machines and spaces — such as the Laser Cutter, Resin Printer, WaterJet Cutter, or high-voltage battery systems.
  3. Complete the Online Components: Each badge includes online reading modules covering the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) and Risk Management Form (RMF) for the relevant equipment or space. Some badges also include an online quiz that must be passed with 100% before proceeding.
  4. Attend the In-Person Induction: After completing the online components, you will attend a practical induction session where Makerspace technical staff will walk you through safe operation, emergency procedures, and equipment-specific requirements.
  5. Get Signed Off by Technical Staff: Once you demonstrate the required level of competency, technical staff will sign off on your badge, granting you approved access to that equipment or space for independent or supervised use.

Build your skills step by step — and unlock more of the UNSW Canberra Makerspace as your project grows.

Where are we located?

The UNSW Canberra Makerspace is distributed across multiple facilities at the UNSW Canberra ADFA campus and the UNSW Canberra City campus, providing accessible environments for hands-on learning, prototyping and engineering innovation.

At the ADFA campus, key facilities include ProtoLAB (Building 17,), FabLAB (Building 18), RoboLAB (Building 18) and ElecLAB (Building 16/18), and TestLAB (Building 20). ProtoHUB is located at the UNSW Canberra City campus (Building B03), supporting collaborative prototyping and fabrication in a central, accessible location.

Together, these locations form a connected Makerspace ecosystem that enables students and staff to design, build and test ideas across a range of specialised environments.
