TestLAB within the UNSW Canberra Makerspace supports material testing, experimental analysis and validation of engineering systems. The facility enables students, researchers and staff to conduct controlled testing using specialised equipment such as universal testing machines and instrumentation systems.
Access to TestLAB is managed through a structured badging system to ensure safe and competent operation.
All users must begin by completing the TestLAB Safety Badge, which provides essential knowledge of laboratory safety, risks and operational requirements. Once completed, users can progress to Individual Machine badges or Individual Space badges depending on their project requirements.
TestLAB badges are designed to:
Most badges require completion of online learning modules, followed by supervised training sessions recorded through a training log. Final access is granted only after users demonstrate safe and competent use of the equipment.
This structured approach ensures that all testing activities are conducted safely, accurately and in line with best practice across the Makerspace and the broader UNSW Making network.
Below are the different badges offered by TestLAB. If you are new to TestLAB, start with the Entry-Level Badge to get inducted into FabLAB Space before moving on to individual machine and advanced badges
TestLAB is located at the UNSW Canberra ADFA campus (Building 20), providing a dedicated space for experimental testing and technical evaluation of engineering systems. The facility supports students and staff with access to specialised testing equipment and instrumentation, enabling practical experimentation, performance validation and research-driven project development.
