CNC Mill Fundamentals and Safety Badge
Fundamental safety and operational training required before using CNC milling machines (Robodrill) in RoboLAB.
This badge represents the foundational safety knowledge and practical skills required to operate CNC milling machines (Robodrill) within RoboLAB at UNSW Canberra.
Prerequisites:
To achieve this badge, participants must:
-
Read and acknowledge the CNC Milling Machines Risk Management Form (RMF)
-
Read and acknowledge the CNC Milling Machine Safe Work Procedure (SWP)
-
Attend face-to-face training:
-
Curriculum-based: 2 hours
-
Non-curriculum-based: 4 hours
-
-
Demonstrate safe and competent operation of the CNC mill under TSG supervision
This badge ensures users understand key hazards, required PPE, and safe operating procedures before using CNC milling equipment in RoboLAB.
This module requires users to read and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) for CNC milling machines, including the Fanuc Robodrill used in RoboLAB.
The RMF outlines:
-
Key hazards such as entanglement, crushing, flying objects, sharp edges, noise, and manual handling risks
-
Required control measures including machine guards, interlocks, emergency stops, and safe work procedures
-
Mandatory use of appropriate PPE (e.g. safety glasses, enclosed footwear, protective clothing)
-
Training and induction requirements prior to machine operation
-
Emergency procedures, incident reporting, and safe shutdown practices
Completion of this module confirms that the user understands the risks associated with CNC milling operations and the controls required to work safely in the workshop environment.
Click here to completeThis module requires users to read and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for operating CNC milling machines, including the Fanuc Robodrill used in RoboLAB.
The SWP outlines:
-
Required PPE, including safety glasses, enclosed footwear, and appropriate protective clothing
-
Pre-operation checks such as verifying workholding, tooling, coolant levels, and program setup
-
Safe operating procedures, including running programs cautiously, avoiding contact with moving parts, and never leaving the machine unattended
-
Correct handling and removal of swarf using appropriate tools (not by hand)
-
Post-operation requirements such as cleaning the machine, shutting down equipment, and maintaining a safe workspace
-
Emergency procedures including use of the emergency stop and reporting incidents
Completion of this module confirms that the user understands the correct and safe procedures for operating CNC milling equipment.
Click here to completeThis module consists of a supervised, face-to-face induction session on the CNC milling machine (Fanuc Robodrill) in RoboLAB.
During this session, participants will:
-
Be introduced to the machine, its components, and controls
-
Demonstrate understanding of key safety requirements from the RMF and SWP
-
Learn correct machine setup including workholding, tooling, and program loading
-
Perform safe start-up, operation, and shutdown procedures
-
Identify emergency stop functions and safe response actions
-
Practice safe machining under guidance, including first-run checks and supervision
Face-to-face component requirements:
-
Curriculum-based training: 2 hours
-
Non-curriculum-based training: 4 hours
This induction must be completed with a TSG staff member.
Successful completion requires demonstration of safe and competent operation of the CNC mill.
