Metal Mill Fundamentals and Safety Badge
Demonstrates competency in the safe operation and fundamental use of manual metal milling machines in RoboLAB.
The Metal Mill Fundamentals and Safety Badge certifies that the holder has successfully completed the required safety documentation and practical training for the safe use of manual milling machines in RoboLAB.
Prerequisite
To enrol in this badge, users must hold the Metal Fabrication Fundamentals and Safety Badge.
To obtain this badge, users must:
- Read and acknowledge the Risk Management Form (RMF) for manual milling machines
- Read and acknowledge the Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for manual milling machines
- Attend and complete a 6-hour face-to-face induction session delivered by RoboLAB technical staff
Successful completion confirms that the user has demonstrated an understanding of safe setup, operation, and shutdown procedures for manual milling machines in accordance with RoboLAB workshop safety requirements.
Before operating the manual milling machines in RoboLAB, users must read and understand the Risk Management Form (RMF).
This document outlines the hazards and control measures associated with the safe use of manual milling machines.
The RMF covers:
• potential hazards when operating the machine
• required personal protective equipment (PPE)
• risk control measures

During this session, users will be introduced to:
• the main components of the manual milling machine
• safe setup and workholding methods
• correct use of cutting tools
• safe operating procedures
• emergency stop and safety features
• cleaning and shutdown procedures
Users will complete a supervised practical session and demonstrate safe operation of the machine.
Successful completion confirms that the user understands the safe use of manual milling machines in RoboLAB, UNSW Canberra ADFA Campus, Building 18 Level 1.
