Totally new to 3D Printing?

Overwhelmed? Need more information? Let's start with the basics!

What Is 3D Printing?

3D printing is an additive manufacturing technology that helps us turn digital files into 3D physical parts. It is a great method for creating low cost, complex models for prototyping.

The best place to start is Understanding FDM 3D Printing, as it's the cheapest and quickest type of 3D printing we offer.

However we also have other types of 3D printing services available, Click here for a guide to all the types of 3D printers

How do I create a file for 3D printing?

In order to send a file to our 3D Printing Hub you need to make a 3D file.

There are many different CAD programs you can use to make 3D files, any program that will export a .stl file will work for our 3D printing hub. The best program to start with is one you already know how to use, but we'd recommend the following

  • Fusion360 (Free for students)
  • Solidworks (Available via UNSW)
  • Rhino3D (Available via UNSW)
  • Onshape (Free for students, no downloads required)
  • TinkerCad (Free for all, No downloads required)

You don't need to design your own files from scratch either, you can also create models of existing shapes using 3D Scanning technology or start with files other people have shared online from sites like Thingiverse

How do I Design for 3D printing at UNSW?

We can make any kind of shapes in our digital CAD software but not all of them are capable of being printed in the real world. Check out our 3D printing Basics guide for an explanation on how a 3D printer will translate your designs to physical objects and tips on how to design objects that are easy to print.
