The UNSW Canberra badge system offers organised access to workshops, laboratories, and technical facilities at all makerspace areas at UNSW Canberra ADFA Campus and City Campus.
Badges confirm that users are trained, competent, and can work safely in shared spaces. Whether you're doing coursework, research, or project work, badges provide a straightforward pathway from induction to independent equipment use.
Begin with an entry badge and progress to more advanced badges as needed for your project.

Entry level badges are the mandatory first step for all users. Each badge covers the safety, emergency, and conduct requirements for a specific space. You must hold the relevant entry level badge before accessing any equipment or progressing to additional badges.
These badges:
Additional entry badges provide access to specific equipment or defined tool groups within a Makerspace. Once you have completed the relevant entry level badge for your space, you may undertake these badges to extend your access.
These badges:
Specialist equipment access granted based on project need.
Advanced machining badges are required for users undertaking higher-level machining work. These badges recognise demonstrated competency built through a minimum number of supervised project hours and are awarded based on performance, not enrolment.
These badges:
Speak to Makerspace technical staff if your project requires advanced machining access.
Machine-specific training delivered as required.
Individual machine badges provide access to specific pieces of equipment within the UNSW Canberra Makerspace. These badges are required before independent use of the relevant machine and are issued based on operational need.
These badges:
Contact makerspace technical staff if you are unsure whether an individual machine badge is required before using a piece of equipment.
Individual Space Badges provide access to specific Makerspace facilities within the UNSW Canberra Makerspace, where users require additional training beyond general safety induction. These badges ensure that users understand the operational requirements and safe use of each space.
These badges:
Individual Space Badges ensure that users are prepared to work safely within each environment while maintaining equipment integrity and shared workspace standards.
If you are unsure whether a Space Badge is required, please contact the Makerspace Technical Team prior to accessing the facility.
